The Calling of a Priest

The Calling of a Priest

A short documentary that focused on the life of a local priest and his reasons for choosing that path. The project’s primary emphasis was to paint a portrait of a person while exploring their space.

Other objectives included having a strong composition, sound design and continuity editing. The reason I chose to interview a priest was because I do not come from a religious background and it was an interesting question to ponder how and why someone would choose the life of a priest. It was a revealing process not only for the content but the technical aspects of filming itself. This documentary was created for an introductory film design class where we learned the basics of filming including working with cameras, lighting, sound, and composition.

The screen captures featured highlight some of the important scenes that contribute to the documentary as well as the filmmaking process. For example the shot of the priest, Father Joseph, during the interview was an amazing filming experience because there was a huge set up which I organized by myself. With that shot I had two mobile light boxes, a single camera, and a lav microphone that recorded the interview. Taking all of these technical pieces into account required a serious amount of organization and planning. The other screen captures demonstrate different filming techniques I explored as well as important content that helped to enhance the documentary.
