SYNCH

Synch is a mobile application that encourages active commuting by tracking users’ commute and providing incentives.

The Problem

There are many facets of commuting that have issues, but diving in more closely we began to notice the lack of interest in active commuting. We define active commuting as anything physical: walking, biking, rollerblading, skateboarding, etc. Our findings showed that most people found  active commuting unappealing because it wasn’t convenient and it was also intimidating.

Developing the Experience

In order to understand how to approach the problem of active commuting, we developed several personas that embodied the different aspects of our demographic. These personas consisted of an in-depth analysis of their daily lives, wants, desires and concerns. Using these personas we began to develop a solution that addressed the many issues they faced with active commuting. This was followed by the creation of user flows and then wireframes to tailor their experience.

The Solution

Provide an incentive to encourage active commuting. We developed a concept that revolves around users tracking their active commute through their mobile devices and smart watches. The idea is if a user actively commutes they will receive discounts from local businesses who also want to promote active commuting. That way everyone benefits: the environment is cleaner; the participant is healthier; and the business gets to promote itself and build community spirit. Now active commuting becomes more enjoyable than inconvenient.

In addition to receiving discounts, Synch allows users to leverage the data pool from their smart devices, giving everyone the opportunity to see how active commuting has made an impact on their commute, their health and the environment.

Please feel free to experience Synch through our Invision prototype or watch the explainer video to learn more.

Team

Synch was created for a design workshop led by Instrument’s Chip Truex. Working with Rachel Simons as a partner on the project we developed the concept and idea together.
